The True Story of How I Fell In LOVE with Anime.
I have to say it was a bright sunny day here in South Florida… This is important cause when I was a kid Going Outside was terrible for me. I am allergic to like everything and feel that to breathe I need a bubble. But there was a great part to not having to be outside with the other kids…Learning to ride bikes and rollerblades. (Both of which I can physically do to clarify) and that was Saturday Morning Cartoons.
Now I am going to share a secret with you… I secretly LOVE Cartoons. I tease my boyfriend about watching cartoons all the time.. but secretly happy that he turns them on cause I am right there watching with him most of the time. (Our favorite is Tom and Jerry)
Anyway, Back to Saturday Morning Cartoons. Now as an adult looking back, I would have to say that it started with the Winx Club. (Bloom, I adore you!) Believe it or not this Cartoon here in America is actually an Italian Anime. (And please dont slaughter me for this… but most anime is kind of cartoonish) I also watched Sailor Moon at this time and liked the idea of being a superhero.
The next thing that happened in life was the discovery of Manga… I was in middle school…In a far and remote small town. When my best friend at the time handed me a Manga of Inuyasha. I am pretty sure I devoured that book on the drive to school…Which was like 20 minutes. (Yes, I read fast and with comprehension) Now this got me hooked…and my mom being the involved night owl parent that she is… knew what I was reading and saw it on Adult Swim. She would wake me up so that I could watch it with her. (Yes, my mom was the type of mom who would let me stay up past my bedtime and read or watch anime) This fostered the love that I had for this particular dogman and still do have a sweet spot for.
During this time in my life I was in high school and started a friendship with the Technical Wizard. Seriously… He still sends me anime to watch. (Best Friend Award and Awesomeness Points!) I knew about his love for anime and I dont believe that he ever really shared it with me until years later…After my cousins dubbed me “Queen of the Nerds” But that is an entirely different story!
Anyway…He started to share his love for this great artwork which was around 2014. I think it first started with the music he would listen to… I wanted to know more and since it was so upbeat, I quickly put it to use when I was at work to help me get stuff done at the end of the night when I was tired. Here are 4 of the original songs he sent me.
This of course led to me asking relentless questions (and I am sure that if he is reading this… He is smirking…cause he used to tell me Google worked to answer questions too) This interaction in my life led to me watching Sword Art Online (SAO) Which I believe was only my fourth anime… (PS..I still haven’t finished it. Much to the dismay of my Boyfriend.) But from there I did go on a little bit of a spree. I watched the first season of SOA, the first season of Fairy Tail, Akame Ga Kill, A Bit of Naruto, and various other anime that I never went back to cause I just wasn’t interested.
But I did make a giant discovery and it was eye-opening! Now we all know about Sub or Dub and we all have our preferences. (Some people like me (cause I am awesome) like both and it doesn’t bother us to read while watching a show.) I discovered this when I discovered RWBY. I didn’t know the difference… The Technical Wizard explained it several times and I would get frustrated cause I could not remember which one was which. So I believe it was he who showed me what would become my favorite anime of all time.
RWBY- Now this is where the realization of being in love came in…and boy was it a trip! RWBY for those of you who don’t know is an American Anime created by a company called RoosterTeeth. Here is a link to my post about RWBY and why it is so wonderful! But back to the story… Love Hurts… It makes you mad and it also inspires you to be the best you can be. And that is exactly what happened… I started telling my family and my little cousins about RWBY… and also forced my boyfriend to watch it with me. But soon we had watched all of it… and I was sad…and well… disappointed.. cause I didn’t have that go-to anime to watch anymore. I then started to feel that craving to watch something…anything that was even close to it…and that’s when I got this question… Have you watched Sword Art Online???
SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!
I think I about died inside when my boyfriend asked me this… I am still 98% sure that I told him all about SAO…But also pretty sure I never actually said the words SWORD ART ONLINE. So he watched all of it… And I do mean all of it. Like there is a movie and there are 4 Seasons maybe more… (again…I only watched the first one). He binged and watched the entire thing! Then asked me about it… I was so shocked and just stunned that I was at a loss for words.
And by this post… you can safely assume that does not happen a lot.
This of course turned into a weekly discussion of all things anime and an almost daily reuniting of our love for this wonderful motion picture artwork. He picks the anime… I watch some of it or none depending on if I like it and he tells me all about it either way.
What can you say I love anime… it’s been bringing people and ideas into my life since I was a small child. It’s a wonderful thing and still to this day… I watch Inuyasha with my mom and get texts about anime and smile when my boyfriend says “Hey… do you wanna watch ….?” The only difference is now… I have you wonderful readers to share it all with.
