UnEnchanted: An Unfortunate Fairy Tale (A Paranormal Book Club Review)

UnEnchanted is the captivating tale of a third-generation descendant of the Brothers Grimm—a 16-year-old girl who doesn’t quite fit the mold. She’s not the popular girl, the brainiac, or the sporty type. As fate would have it, she’s burdened with a dreadful curse. To break the curse that has claimed the lives of her father, her uncle, and all the other males in her family, she must survive all the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. If she fails, the curse will pass to the next member of her family.
Synopsis
The story is set in high school, where she faces daily challenges from the popular girls and the jocks, not to mention her lack of friends. Everyone seems to make fun of her, even her best friend, Nan, who uses her unfortunate circumstances to boost her own Twitter following. This book resonates with the underdog in all of us, captivating the mind and taking us on a journey through not one, but two fairy tales.
Mina Grime, our protagonist, is thrust into a whirlwind of adventure and danger as she navigates the treacherous waters of high school and the magical realm. With each fairy tale she survives, she grows stronger and more determined to break the curse that has plagued her family for generations. Her resilience and courage are truly inspiring, making her a relatable and endearing character that readers can root for.
My Review
I have to give this book 4 out of 5 stars. The writing was splendid and attention-grabbing, and I didn’t want to put it down. It’s quite the page-turner. The author, Chanda Hahn, has a knack for creating vivid and immersive worlds that draw you in from the very first page. Her storytelling is masterful, seamlessly blending the everyday struggles of a teenage girl with the fantastical elements of fairy tales.
One of the most compelling aspects of UnEnchanted is the way it explores the themes of identity and self-discovery. As Mina grapples with her newfound responsibilities and the weight of her family’s legacy, she learns valuable lessons about herself and her place in the world. This journey of self-discovery is something that many readers can relate to, making the story all the more engaging and impactful.
I enjoyed this book so much that I’m going to explore some of Chanda Hahn’s other works before diving into the next book in this fascinating series. Her ability to craft such an engaging and thought-provoking story is truly commendable, and I can’t wait to see what other adventures await in her other books.
Spoiler Alert
I wish I could say that this fairy tale has a perfect Disney happily ever after, but it doesn’t. Instead, it offers a more realistic and nuanced ending that leaves you eagerly anticipating the next installment. This unexpected twist adds depth to the story and keeps readers on their toes, eager to find out what happens next.
