Book Review- Shadow Rising (Shadow Wars Book 1)

This story was Unexceptionally magical. It has everything! New and old best friends, a hot simmering romance, and a brand new take on the paranormal.

There are two types of magicals – the Sun class, and the Moon class. After the vicious Shadow War a hundred years before, the classes were separated. Sun magicals agreed to roam the daylight hours, and let the Moon magicals walk the streets at night.

Theia Foxglove is an Elkie.

Technically Sun class, but with her elflike ears, and badass bow, she was born to live in the woods of upstate New York, and doesn’t give two craps about Sun/Moon politics. And she was happy doing just that, thank you very much, until her dad died and her mom found a new guy to love, William Geiser – the Sun Mayor of New York City…

Now she’s being sent to Zenith Academy, a supernatural school in the Big Apple for Sun class magicals – Celestials, Mages, the elite of the elite. And she hates everything about it. Except learning to shoot white orbs from her hands. Even Theia admits that that’s kinda cool…

But soon she stumbles across a plot to reignite the Shadow Wars all over again, and Theia suspects her soon-to-be stepdad is right in the middle of it.

Proving it, though, will be another question entirely…

What I liked Loved about this book!

Have you ever encountered a character in a book who seemed like they could be your best friend, someone you’d wish into existence just for the chance to give them a high-five?

I’ve had that rare experience a few times, including this one. Gabby Fawkes and Charlie Soul have crafted such a compelling character in Theia that I found myself wanting to reach out and congratulate her.

Theia Foxglove stands out from the typical teenage protagonist. Despite grappling with the universal trials of adolescence, she’s also coping with the loss of her father just a year prior, and her mother’s insensitive decision to remarry the Sun Mayor of New York City without considering Theia’s feelings.

Yet, through it all, Theia stays true to herself and her friends, even in the face of life-threatening dangers. She’s a formidable Elkie, embodying strength and integrity. Her steadfast adherence to her own morals and values is truly admirable.

For anyone with a penchant for the supernatural and the paranormal, this book is an absolute must-read. Secure your copy, and while you’re at it, make sure to pick up the sequel as well.
