Fandom Friday: Yu-Gi-Oh-Finding the Heart of the Cards

So when I was a little girl I would see the commercials for Yu-Gi-Oh on Saturday morning cartoons and I would just turn off the TV when the show came on and go on with my day. So while my boyfriend and I were cleaning his closet at the beginning of our relationship we stumbled upon books of Yu-Gi-Oh cards and I made fun of him for having all these cards and for liking the show. In return for this teasing, he convinced me to watch the entire first season.

Now as you know if you have been reading this blog for a while, I love anime. I also love cartoons… and would rather watch a Disney Movie or a Hallmark Movie then just about anything in the theatre. So having to watch Yu-Gi-Oh for the last 3 months… (yes… we both work and we could only watch it together late at night) was not a hardship.

But it was unexpected that I would like this childhood anime.

What Yu-Gi-Oh is:

Yu-Gi-Oh is a 1999 TV Anime Series that used to be shown as part of the Saturday Morning Cartoons. This show was widely popular and even developed into a full blown franchise. The story focuses on a young boy named Yugi and his friends. All of these kids play a game called Duel Monsters which is a collectable card game and Yugi’s Grandfather teaches them about the Heart of the Cards.

Yugi though has a necklace that is actually a Millennium Item called the Millennium Puzzle. This puzzle hold the spirit of a trapped Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, who comes out to save Yugi and his friends whenever they are threatened by others.

What I liked about it:

I really enjoyed this Cartoon/Anime. It was not what I was expecting. I went into this thinking that it was going to be about some boy who got to play some game. Totally not kidding here I did not want to see this show. I thought for sure that it would be terrible and that I would hate it. I honestly cant believe that I am saying this… but I have actually looked up how to play Duel Monsters and have looked up placed to play this game against others cause I want to play it. The show makes the game look so fun and IF there is ever a holographic game board for this game, I will probably go into debt paying for it.

I absolutely love the characters in this show. They are friends and at the heart of their friendship is respect and caring for each other. I think that this is a great thing!

Tea Gardener and Mai Valentine are my favorite characters. I think you can tell why just from their clothing. lol. I am obsessed with Boots! But that’s not the only thing these two kick ass women have in common though. They both are awesome in their own right. Mai kicks butt at Duel Monsters and actually does duel Tea at one point but forfeits instead of destroying her.

All in all I would have to say that this is a great anime and that I really cant wait to start the next season.
