What memory of your own would you view in the Pensieve?

June 17th: A Tribute to My Culinary Wizard Grandfather

As I pen these words, the calendar marks June 16th, a prelude to a day that holds a treasure trove of memories. Tomorrow, June 17th, isn’t just another day in the sultry embrace of mid-June, where the air is thick with humidity and the afternoons are painted with rain. It’s a day that celebrates the birth of a man who was a cornerstone of my life—my grandfather.

Six years have passed since he left us, yet his presence lingers in the quiet moments, as tangible as the pages of a well-loved book. If I were to peer into the depths of a Pensieve, I’m certain it would reveal my fondest memory of him—a memory that’s more of a heartfelt feeling than a vivid picture.

There’s no tangible proof, no photograph or video, to confirm the reality of these moments, but they are etched in my heart. My grandfather, a clandestine gourmet, would whip up the most delectable thin steaks, seasoned simply with salt and pepper. He had a secret pot, hidden from my grandmother’s view, where he cooked these steaks to perfection.

Perched on the kitchen counter, I was his sous-chef in spirit, watching the culinary magic unfold. We’d share the pot, each armed with a fork, savoring bites of what I still believe to be the best steak ever crafted. Our conversations meandered like the stories we shared, with him always lending a patient ear to my latest readings.

The last time we shared this simple, yet profound ritual was around the release of the seventh Harry Potter book—a fitting parallel, as he was the Dumbledore to my Harry, guiding me through life’s mysteries with wisdom and love.

So, as June 17th dawns, I celebrate not just his birth, but the legacy of love and the gastronomic adventures he left behind. In the Pensieve of my mind, that beautiful memory is as clear and precious as the most potent of spells.
