Food Wars

Food Wars, or Shokugeki no Soma, is one of the latest anime to receive the hype treatment online. The series follows a young boy who works in his father’s restaurant. The main character, Soma Yukihira, is a master chef with an unknown power that will cause the world of cooking to flip on its head. He is a boy with a dream and he works hard every day to accomplish it. Over the course of the anime, we follow Soma Yikihira on his middle school journey to the Tohatchi Cooking School. A prestigious school where very few students pass and all aspiring chefs are welcome to come and participate in Food Wars.

Soma gets off to a great start with the other students by making an announcement speech proclaiming that he will be taking the Top spot. This automatically puts a large target on his back, But not one that stays there very long. He is a friendly guy whose love of cooking is shown throughout the anime and in almost every episode he is making some girls’ and guys’ clothes fall off with how delicious his food is. He takes every challenge he faces with a game-on attitude and doesn’t back down even if it looks like he will fail. He also loves to mismatch flavors and make some crazy combinations, a talent that he gets from challenges that he has been participating in since he was a young boy cooking at his father’s side.

Yukihira actually made me want to cook (which is not an easy feat) but the way that he loves to cook and the way that he views cooking really resonated with me. I enjoyed the animation style as well. But the overall character development of the people around him just from being exposed to his love for cooking makes me want to go to culinary school. I enjoyed watching him make friends and also learn from the people around him. His upbringing of trying new flavors in weird combinations made me laugh. Overall I would say that Soma is my favorite character and also one of the best cooks in the school.

The first season adapts the first eight volumes (Chapters 1-60) of Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki’s manga series. This series is available on Netflix and is a pure delicious meal. Be sure to have snacks available if you are going to watch this one.
